General Admission Planetarium Tours

Public tours are held every Saturday evening at 7pm in the Planetarium, followed by telescope viewing if weather permits.

One of our volunteer guides will take you on a journey of discovery in our immersive domed ceiling that displays the darkest of night sky scenes with pinpoint perfection. While we all cover the same key topics each of us have a different interest and expertise so do come along on different nights for some different perspectives, and do bring your own questions. See below for a brief bio of our guides.

Admission is Adults ($15), Primary/Secondary Students ($7.50) , Members free.

Please make a booking so that we can schedule enough staff and in the rare event we need to cancel we can advise you 2-3 hours ahead of time. If there are no bookings by 3pm the duty manager may decide to cancel the tour that night.

  • Each month those with a thirst for astronomical knowledge, we gather each month in our club room for a series of presentations, discussions and debate. Attendees are from all walks of life, many with zero prior knowledge and some with decades. When weather permits we will roll back the roof and turn on the telescopes as well. Members free, visitors $5.

  • The blood red Moon returns to our sky for one night only. The Moon enters the Earth's shadow at 8:47pm and reaches totality at 11:18pm. This is one of those bucket-list opportunities, if the cloud cover allows we should get the best view from New Zealand. ADMISSION BY DONATION - all welcome.

  • Saturday 19 June

  • Welcome in the new year with a special viewing at 6am as Matariki rises. Together with our friends at Kiwi North we open the planetarium (perfect viewing no matter what the weather's doing), telescopes if possible then we have local iwi welcome in the New Year on the viewing mound behind the Museum.

With a background in astro-physics, Peter has a strong interest in the science behind what we out there. 

From the Big Bang to our current Solar System and ultimately us, Peter likes to paint the picture of how it all came to be. 

Julie

Combining a love for the stars with a reverence and passion for the knowledge of Tangata whenua, Julie brings an understanding of the night sky that is uniquely ours.

Jane

Taking a tour with Jane will turn those stars into stories that go back as far as civilisation itself.

Nobody in our team has spent more time mastering the constellations and their stories than Jane. 

You will probably need to come back several times to catch all the detail, there's so much to learn here.
